durham ID Lobby Mural | Sunrise Serpentine | 2021 | 300 Morris St. Durham, NC
Entitled, “Sunrise Serpentine,” this mural is situated in the lobby of the Durham ID building at 300 Morris Street in Durham, NC. It was designed to ensure an inspiring experience for a liminal space and is a tribute to creativity and growth in the heart of Durham’s Innovation District. The mural aims to be immediately engaging as continuous shapes and colors wrap around corners and flow seamlessly into the architecture above. Its sherbet gradients mimic the palette of transitional skies as nested arches serpentine from door-to-door around a solar focal point. This central mass hosts the entire piece, giving rise to phototropic plant forms, sunny auras and ubiquitous energy. In passing, storylines meander and colors blend across the wall as a guide to and through the space.
UPDATE** IN THE SUMMER OF 2022, DURHAM ID RENOVATED THEIR SPACE TO INCLUDE 321 COFFEE SHOP. IN DOING SO THEY RENOVATED THE ORIGINAL LOBBY SPACE TO BE MORE FLUID FOR THIS TRAFFIC. THIS RENOVATION INCLUDES A DOORWAY, CAREFULLY PLACED BENEATH THE ARCHES OF “SUNRISE SERPENTINE.” IN PRESERVATION OF THE MURAL I WAS INVITED BACK TO TOUCH UP AND EDIT THE WORK TO FIT THE NEW SPACE. I BELIEVE THE NEW, FINISHED SPACE IS MORE WELCOMING AND PRONOUNCED. THE CARE TAKEN BY LONGFELLOW REAL ESTATE TO SITUATE THE DOORWAY ALLOWS THE MURAL’S ORIGINAL CONCEPT TO REMAIN INTACT WHILE ADDING AN INTERACTIVE ELEMENT TO WALKING THROUGH THE ARCHWAY.
